Origins of the Salute

"There are a number of origins of the military greeting of saluting. In the age of chivalry the knights were all mounted and wore steel armour, which covered the body completely. When two friendly knights met it was the custom for each to raise the visor and expose his face to the view of the other. This was always done with the right hand, the left being used to hold the reins. It was a significant gesture of friendship and confidence, since it exposed the features and also removed the right hand from the vicinity of a weapon (sword). Also in ancient times the freemen of Europe were allowed to carry arms: when two freemen met, each would raise his right hand to show that he held no weapons in it and that the meeting was friendly."

in class today: first stabs at poems

my abscence of thought

sitting in class again,
mind is empty again,
speechless again, thoughtless.
boneless, spineless,
again.

my expectations, their expectations,
his expectations, her expectations.

I have no thoughts, have I no thoughts,
why have I none?

when did they leave, why?
did I take you for granted,
were you not wanted?

sometimes you return, reminding me
were you ever only mine, only my own?

who do you belong to, to whom do you belong?
you come, and you go away,
why don't you stay?

the seeds of wonder

when you come I cower,
when you go I wonder,
right now I ask, but in my heart,
I know, I'm void.

sometimes I ponder,
I ponder what others might wonder
then, from under,
suddenly,
I am asunder.

The Raven

not sure why, but this poem appeals to me. I hope you enjoy it as much as i do.

The Raven by Edgar A. Poe

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
`'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door -
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; -
This it is, and nothing more,'

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
`Sir,' said I, `or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you' - here I opened wide the door; -
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, `Lenore!'
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, `Lenore!'
Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
`Surely,' said I, `surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore -
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; -
'Tis the wind and nothing more!'

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore.
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door -
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
`Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,' I said, `art sure no craven.
Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore -
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning - little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door -
Bird or beast above the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as `Nevermore.'

But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only,
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered -
Till I scarcely more than muttered `Other friends have flown before -
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before.'
Then the bird said, `Nevermore.'

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,
`Doubtless,' said I, `what it utters is its only stock and store,
Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful disaster
Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore -
Till the dirges of his hope that melancholy burden bore
Of "Never-nevermore."'

But the raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling,
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door;
Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore -
What this grim, ungainly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore
Meant in croaking `Nevermore.'

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing
To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core;
This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining
On the cushion's velvet lining that the lamp-light gloated o'er,
But whose velvet violet lining with the lamp-light gloating o'er,
She shall press, ah, nevermore!

Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer
Swung by Seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.
`Wretch,' I cried, `thy God hath lent thee - by these angels he has sent thee
Respite - respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore!
Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil! -
Whether tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted -
On this home by horror haunted - tell me truly, I implore -
Is there - is there balm in Gilead? - tell me - tell me, I implore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us - by that God we both adore -
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,
It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels named Lenore -
Clasp a rare and radiant maiden, whom the angels named Lenore?'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting -
`Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!

Tesla coils do mario

"Twin Solid State Musical Tesla coils playing Mario Bros theme song at the 2007 Lightning on the Lawn Teslathon sponsored by DC Cox (Resonance Research Corp) in Baraboo WI. The music that you hear is coming from the sparks that these two identical high power solid state Tesla coils are generating. There are no speakers involved. The Tesla coils stand 7 feet tall and are each capable of putting out over 12 foot of spark. They are spaced about 18 feet apart. The coils are controlled over a fiber optic link by a single laptop computer. Each coil is assigned to a midi channel which it responds to by playing notes that are programed into the computer software." - source

fun shift

Had a really slow shift at work yesterday. From 13.30-22.00 and absolutely nothing happened. Had I known working would be this easy I would have started ages ago. The height of excitement was dinner and the evening snack around 7. Serve and then clean up! Superfun! I also attempted building a house of cards but it was more difficult than I had anticipated. I'll get it though, not an impossible project. I'm glad I finally have work though. If I'm lucky, I'll get that temp job at GAME as well, as you never know when you work next at the psych ward.

I've (re)started an old prjoect. It's been going very slowly. So slowly, in fact, that I'm starting to doubt it's actually moving in the right direction! I've taken some measures and plan on taking some more. Will keep you (read: myself!) posted on the progress.

There's this book on stress that someone has lying around the student psych clinic. I've been flipping through it and picking out some of my favourites. It's a little satire on the stress hype affliction of our society. Sarcasm is, possibly, the funniest kind of ...fun!

job

My Powerbook has long been neglected. Ever since it was replaced by the bigger more powerful iMac. It makes me sad to say that I've neglected it's beauty and usefulness for far too long. But new times are a coming and it will be the start of a new era for my ol pal the PB 12". Oh yes! I've ordered (or should I say Firas has ordered, with his super apple staff discount! thanks man) a new battery which should kick some life into the machine. Been cleaning up the hdd and preparing it for a clean Os X Leopard upgrade on friday. The new battery will be in my hands mid november. Can't wait for it!

I'm also proud to announce my recent employment by the local hospital. I'll be working as a mental health "assisstant" on the closed ward. Hopefully! I've been bugging them for a part-time job for weeks and today I heard back from them. I'm meeting the lady in charge next week. I'm going to work my arse off this xmas! iPhone here I come! and great summer vacation too! muahaahaha. Mo Moneee fo meeee!

How stuff works!

First off: HowStuffWorks.com

Great website if you're in the market for killing time or just relieving boredom. Does the job well. It's up there on my How-To-Not-Be-Bored list, with Wikipedia and random blog reading. Try it out.
I was reading this particular article about death, namely different ways to go and how painful they are etc. Rather morbid but interesting nonetheless. Does bring the concept disturbingly close to home though, you might want to take a break now and then! ;)

Just realised I read that article on the NewScientist webpage! Here's the link anyhow! "Death Special: How does it feel to die?"

On a heavier note, I weighed myself the other night, and what i saw was VERY disturbing. I don't really care to reveal the exact number but let's just say it was dangerously close to the hundred mark! I've been letting myself go for way too long. It's time to cut back on the fats and hit the gym more often! Seriously! I'm unstoppable, I need to just NOT eat. everytime i start eating i just get way too into it! lol. Not funny! looking at photos from just a year ago when I thought i was big I have grown considerably more "healthy"!

The telemarketing beast is dead!

Finally found it! >> Nix.nu

Put an end to the telemarketer reign over our lives! Block your number (sweden only). I can't believe it took me this long to find this service! and it's free! No more damned "free" socks or razors! I do believe I've won the battle (but not necessarily the war) in this matter.

Quotes

Not sure who said this but I like it!

- "All that shimmers is not gold"

rings very true.

Also discovered some new music recently. Well, some Michael Jackson revivial and some 2pac revival. Better late than never to discover the rap genius 2pac I suppose. Too bad I discovered him now when he's not with us anymore.

Fuel, are quite good as well. Only heard a few of their songs but what I've heard so far I've enjoyed. They're down the same alley as Goo Goo Dolls, The Calling and the like. Very much my kind of music. Also on the trance side of life: Shpongle

Thoughts on flowers, benches and architecture

Some highlights from my trip to Oslo last weekend. On our way back from the park (where the bench photo was taken) I saw this very interesting looking building and just had to stop and take a photo of it.

Signs that autumn is coming. The red flower is really really red to me, is it you? Anyway, I just couldn't help but take a picture.

Walking home at night

Walking home at night and had my camera with me. Good night shots can be difficult to get without a tripod so I'm limited to places where I can rest the camera, on the ground, on a bin, on a railing. Whatever i can find really. But that usually means I can't get the shot from the angle I want. Which ofcourse is a huge drawback. Need a tripod, badly!

I also realised the necessity of an extra battery back. There's nothing more annoying than running out of batteris when you need it the most. So I'm getting an extra battery pack, quite cheaply too. Battery pack for a Canon 350D, €15 (eBay). Wonder if I can find a tripod too on eBay...

Paparazzo: to be or not to be

SO i did get a bit intoxicated last night. BUT, only slightly, and from what I had bought previously from Systemet. Didn't get anything once i was inside.
All in all it was a pretty good night. Lots of people, lots of people I knew! Imagine that. We left a bit later than most, hit the club around 11, probably later than that. By the time we got there though there was a massive queue. Luckily we were on the guestlist (for the student union?) so we skipped the queue and didn't have to pay entry (40kr) woohoo. lol. Can't believe i get even a bit excited over that fact. That's what living UNDER the existential minimum does to you. Though i'm sure alot of people would take issue with me on that point.

I brought my camera and I tend to get quite trigger happy at times. When i got back i noticed i had taken just short of 400 photos! A few blurry ones since it was on manual focus and a few on total strangers. Given that you don't see people walking around with big arse digital SLRs that often in a club setting like this (not at the SU in Örebro anyway!) people thought i was taking photos for some major swedish paper. Made for some pretty entertaining fibbing.

If you want to see the photos of last night I suggest to you the easiest way, which is adding me on Facebook.

Feeling today? You know the feeling you get after a really tiresome and long workout where every muscle in your body is revolting against you? even in places you didn't know you had muscles! That could almost explain the pain I was in this morning. Just rolling over was painful.

To drink or not to drink?

So, tonight I intend to drink 4-5 small beers. I don't intend to get drunk however. The keyword for tonight is Control. Seeing as I'll be taking my camera with me I'd have to be extra careful.

I've been looking for work. Not going very well. I intend to try again later, nearer the holidays. If i do manage to get one i reckon i could earn some serious cash during the xmas hols and New Year for some summer galavanting.

Time to get prepared for the evening's festivities! So long

Change for the better

So I haven't blogged since May 4th it seems. I've recently discovered I'm not much of a writer. As the title suggests, there has been some changes since May 4th, nothing dramatic however.

I'm back in Örebro for one. The fall semester started about 6 weeks ago and with it came a new batch of exchange students. This batch, much like the last, consists of mainly fun-loving kids from all over the world who come here to party mostly, and travel occasionally (whilst drinking usually).

I'm also officially a student therapist this year, in my capacity as a fourth year clin psy student. So, excited about that. I got my first patient the other week and I've gone through the motions of getting the patient approved for student therapy and should start treatment shortly. The modules are more interesting since they are very hands-on, teaching therapy techniques which you can then go on to use during your sessions if you want.

On a more interesting note...ummm, I was in Oslo this weekend with three of the exchange students (three canadians girls, a.k.a. The Wongs). Cool city, quite small but it was cool, with lots of old buildings and the like. A big arse palace downtown and a big park with lots of statues of naked men, women and children in all manners of poses. The statues weren't only in the park. They were scattered all over town, by fountains, by the harbour, on buildings, in the street. Pretty much everywhere. The Norwegians sure like their statues. And ofcourse it has to be said that Norway is f-in expensive! I'd recommend going for the day to Oslo if you're going and make packed lunches etc. And if you're going for longer, I sure hope it's less expensive outside of Oslo otherwise you'd better set aside a disproportionate bit of your budget for Norway if you want to go!

What else...Arvin was in Göteborg from Sunday till today (Tuesday). I went back for a quick visit from Sunday till Monday evening. I thought I'd bring my passport with me back to Örebro in case I would need it for any trips with the exchange students. So, naturally, i take Arvins passport as well as my own (don't ask how i managed to get both). Fortunately i noticed the same night I got back to Örebro and was forced to get the early morning train BACK to Göteborg (7am) and then return on the same day. I've been back for a few hours now. All in all I've spent about...22 hours traveling (bus and train) just this weekend! Urgh, not going ANYWHERE for a few weeks.

Can't really think of anything else to write right now but I will try harder to write more here. I've been thinking of getting my own domain and setting up a "proper" blog. I'm pretty skint at the moment so that will have to wait until the end of the month.

Was thinking of www.emile.se
what do you think? :)
